I. Following brain surgery in Paris, Mairesse emerged from a coma after fifteen days and was kept in hospital for a further six weeks. He had always been seen by the outside world as an introvert of uncertain moods, intense in manner, sometimes headstrong at the wheel. Some of his contemporaries steered clear of him, although Enzo Ferrari, with whose team he spent four years, appreciated his spirit and wrote: ‘He looked as though he were touched by some sacred zeal in everything he did.’ His racing career over, he became even more withdrawn and sometimes aggressive. Two breakdowns were followed by a spell in a Brussels mental hospital. His wife, Dorine, took their two small sons to live with her family in Paris. Almost a year after the accident, Mairesse sat down in an apartment in Ostend and wrote letters to Dorine, to his mother and to Jacques Swaters before taking a fatal overdose of sleeping pills. He was forty years old.
